At the eve of the yearly IATA AGM summit in Sydney it was announced by both Fiji Airways and oneworld that the airline will join the global airline alliance as a connecting partner, the first of its kind for the alliance. The airline will be supervised by Cathay Pacific, American Airlines and Qantas until the integration process is completed, a date has not been set yet. The Connecting Parter system of oneworld comes with the perks of a full membership, like codeshare agreements, interline agreements and status matches of Fiji's frequent flyer program, called Tabua Club, with other oneworld carriers and the oneworld ranking.
The addition of Fiji Airways to oneworld opens up more possibilities to travelers as the addition of Fiji into the global network opens up 9 more destinations is oneworld's already strong presence in the southern Pacific Ocean. Existing agreements with Qantas, American and Cathay will be extended and a partership with British Airways is already in the making with the possibility of extending agreements to Joint Ventures, like the existing trans-Atlantic agreement, but only in the Pacific Ocean.**
The alliance also said that they are in talks with other airlines around the world regarding a possible membership as a oneworld connect partner.
